Report – Celebration of the Raksha Bandhan

The Mission organized celebrations of “Raksha Bandhan” festival on 28 August 2026 at the Chancery, which was graced by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs H.E. Mrs. Razanadrasoa Marie Leontine, the Secretary General of the Antananarivo Municipality H.E. Mrs. Razafimahefa Bao, the Director General of the National Academy of Art and Culture H.E. Mr. Chançard Rarivoson and representatives from the Brahma Kumaris in Antananarivo.

In his speech, Chargé d’Affaires recalled the traditional significance of Raksha Bandhan and its broader meaning including the tradition of tying Rakhis to the Armed Forces, who safeguard the nation. He emphasized the importance of unity, mutual respect, solidarity and compassion that transcend borders, while referring to the ancient Indian philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – The World is One Family”. He also highlighted India’s humanitarian assistance to Madagascar following Tropical Cyclones Fytia and Gezani, as well as India’s humanitarian response to the recent catastrophic floods in Nepal, reflecting the enduring spirit of friendship and solidarity between India and other countries.

As part of the celebrations, the traditional Rakhi ceremony was conducted, during which Rakhis were tied on the wrists of the distinguished dignitaries, symbolizing the bonds of fraternity, mutual respect and goodwill.

In the run-up to the celebration, the Embassy had organized Rakhi Making and Mehendi Competitions, which witnessed enthusiastic participation from members of the Indian community, Hindi and Yoga students, as well as friends of India from Madagascar, showcasing their creativity. The winners and participants were felicitated and presented with certificates and gifts during the celebrations.

The event concluded with vibrant cultural performances by the local students of Hindi and Yoga, followed by refreshments.
